| About the
Calendar Herman Leonard apprenticed with portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh before moving to New York in 1949. He frequented the city's clubs, hearing, photographing, and making the acquaintance of jazz musicians. When he captured their images, Leonard captured something of the music and the times as well. The twelve jazz portraits in this calendar--of Oscar Peterson, Sarah Vaughn, Anita O'Day, and Jimmy Rushing, among others--date from the early fifties in New York and Newport, and the late fifties in Paris. Musicians' birthdays are noted throughout. |
