| About the
Calendar Whitfield Lovell constructs tableaux from charcoal portraits drawn on vintage wood, combined with found objects. Choosing his subjects from a personal archive of old photographs of African Americans, Lovell pays careful attention to its grain and texture and to any remnants of color from paint or wallpaper. Adding the found objects creates three-dimensional settings that thrust these strangers from the past into the viewers space. Lovell's work is in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The National Museum of American Art, and The Seattle Art Museum, among others. |
