About the
Calendar Blues music is based on the irony that singing about hard times and heartache makes you feel good. Melancholy, upbeat, or defiant, it is an idiom that encompasses a multiplicity of tempos, styles, and emotions. Rooted in the African American experience, the blues took hold in the early twentieth century and formed the basis for new musical hybrids in later decades and is still a thriving art form. This calendar spotlights twelve blues legends--Howlin' Wolf, B. B. King, and Bobby Blue Bland, among others--with photographs by Ernest C. Withers, famous for his documentation of the Beale Street blues scene, the Negro baseball leagues and the civil rights movement. Birthdays of blues artists are noted throughout. |
