The Emancipation Proclamation was signed in January 1863. Since most slaves were unable to read, they were at the mercy of people who were not in a hurry to tell them they were free. On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas and read this document to the slaves.

Slaves filled the streets, the town halls and the African churches - praying, praising and thanking God that they had lived to see this day. Old women sang and old men cried. Slavery in America was over. The 19th of June became a day of JUBILEE and was celebrated every year as "JUNETEENth." As older generations died off and younger generations moved north, the significance of Juneteenth faded
