The owners of the Diamond Milling Company (the original manufacturers of Cream of Wheat) noticed the wide smile of their Negro waiter while dining in a restaurant in Chicago. Instantly they saw his image as a replacement for their old logo. The waiter was asked to pose for some full-face snapshots and was paid five dollars. Rastus has adorned the Cream of Wheat box since 1901. Neither he nor any of his relatives has received any further compensation. All plaques have
